THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S INTERNATIONAL AWARD

GEMS Wellington Academy – Al Khail is proud to offer The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, a prestigious program designed to challenge and empower young people.

Founded in 1956 by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, this award focuses on equipping students with essential life skills, preparing them for future responsibilities, and helping them navigate both successes and challenges.

Why is this Award so valuable?

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is globally recognised by employers and universities, highlighting the key skills participants develop. These include:

  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership
  • Problem-solving
  • Perseverance

These skills are invaluable in all aspects of life, both inside and outside the classroom.

How does it work at WEK?

The Award is facilitated by Mr. Talsania, our dedicated Award Coordinator, with support from other staff members who assist with training, expeditions, and student mentoring. Mr. Talsania's extensive experience in expeditions, including navigating challenging terrains without technology, ensures our students are in capable hands.

Students can begin their journey at the following stages:

  • Bronze Award: Year 10
  • Silver Award: Years 11, 12 & 13
  • Gold Award: Years 12 & 13

Participants commit to a minimum of one hour per week in each of the following areas:

  • Physical Activity: Improving in a sport, dance, or fitness activity to encourage healthy habits.
  • Skill: Developing practical, musical, social skills, or personal interests. Examples include learning a new language or musical instrument.
  • Service (Volunteering): Contributing to the community, fostering empathy, and developing compassion.
  • Adventurous Journey: Planning, training for, and completing an expedition that promotes teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills in a challenging environment. Electronic devices are not allowed during the expedition, enhancing their navigation skills with a map and compass. Safety measures are in place, including GPS trackers and 4x4 support.

Time Requirements:

  • Bronze: 3 months per activity (with an additional 3 months for one activity). Adventurous journey: 2 days, 1 night (minimum 6 hours of journeying).
  • Silver: 6 months per activity (with a further 6 months in one activity if the Bronze Award wasn't obtained). Adventurous journey: 3 days, 2 nights (minimum 7 hours of journeying).
  • Gold: 12 months per activity (with a further 6 months in one activity if the Silver Award wasn't obtained). Adventurous journey: 4 days, 3 nights (minimum 8 hours of journeying).

The Adventurous Journey:

This is often the highlight of the Award, where students learn to cook, navigate, and set up camp, all while working as a team. It's a significant step towards independence and builds crucial interpersonal skills.

Important Note: Attendance at ALL training sessions is mandatory to ensure students are fully prepared for their expeditions. Proactive engagement and commitment are key to success in this award.
