In Early Years, writing begins with mark-making, storytelling through pictures, and forming letters through play. At GEMS Wellington Academy - Al Khail, our approach to writing is child-led, creative, and aligned with the EYFS goals for communication, language, and physical development.
In Early Years, writing begins with mark-making, storytelling through pictures, and forming letters through play. At GEMS Wellington Academy - Al Khail, our approach to writing is child-led, creative, and aligned with the EYFS goals for communication, language, and physical development.
Here are five ways to support early writing at home:
- Encourage drawing and mark-making. It all starts with making marks. Give access to crayons, paint, chalk, and paper.
- Model writing in everyday life. Show how you use writing: lists, labels, notes. Let your child “help” write shopping lists or cards.
- Build fine motor skills. Playdough, threading beads, and building blocks develop hand strength and coordination.
- Celebrate all attempts. Avoid correcting too much. Instead, focus on effort and creativity.
- Create a writing space. A small, inviting area with materials helps writing feel like a fun, natural activity.
Writing confidence grows when children feel safe to explore and express themselves.
