Starting school is a significant milestone in your child’s life. For many families, FS1 or FS2 is the first step into a world of learning, friendships, and growing independence. It’s an exciting time, full of possibilities—but it can also come with a few nerves for both children and parents.
New faces, routines, and expectations can feel overwhelming at first. But with a bit of preparation and lots of encouragement, the transition can be smooth and positive. Here are our five top tips to help your child get off to a great start in the Foundation Stage.
- Establish a Routine
Children feel more secure when they know what to expect. In the lead-up to the first day, begin adjusting bedtime, wake-up time, and meal times to match the school day. Practise wearing the school uniform—make sure your child can go to the toilet comfortably in it. You might even want to take a few practice journeys to school so the route becomes familiar and less daunting. - Talk About What to Expect
Help your child visualise what school will be like. Read books or watch age-appropriate videos about starting school. If your school has shared welcome videos, watch them together and talk through what they see. Be honest and reassuring about drop-off: explain who will take them and that while they’ll stay at school without you, you’ll always return to pick them up. - Practise Independence
Build your child’s confidence by encouraging small, everyday skills. Show them how to pack their school bag, use the toilet independently, and tidy up after playing—these are part of the daily routine at school. If your child hasn’t used a lunchbox before, practise eating from it at home. Learning to open containers and manage their food gives them a sense of capability at lunchtime. - Label Everything
Label everything your child takes to school—jumpers, shoes, lunchboxes, water bottles. With so many similar items, labels help avoid confusion. As most school bags look alike, add a distinctive keyring or tag so your child can easily recognise theirs. For hats, a ribbon or sticker can help prevent mix-ups. Keep in mind that things can occasionally go missing or get swapped—so think carefully about which toys should come to school and which are better left at home. - Stay Positive and Supportive
Children often mirror your emotions. Keep conversations about school upbeat and confident—remind them how much fun they’re going to have! During drop-off, a cheerful, quick goodbye often works best. Encourage your child to walk in independently if possible. You can also agree in advance on a number of goodbye hugs or kisses. If your child does become upset, trust the teacher to step in and soothe them—this helps build trust and reassures your child that school is a safe space. And always be on time for pick-up—being prompt reinforces that you’ll always return.
Finally, whatever happens on that first day… bring them back the next! Consistency is key.
