Supporting Literacy and Numeracy at Home in the Early Years

May 2025

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children begin to build the essential skills that form the foundation for lifelong learning. At GEMS Wellington Academy - Al Khail, our approach to early literacy and numeracy is grounded in the British curriculum and enriched by play-based learning that makes concepts meaningful, engaging, and accessible for every child.

Supporting this learning at home doesn't need to be complicated. It’s about creating a language and number rich environment where children are encouraged to explore, talk, and try things out for themselves.

For literacy, storytelling, singing, and simple letter games can make a big impact. Talk about the sounds in words, play “I Spy,” and let your child draw, scribble, or “write” lists with you.

For numeracy, count everyday objects - stairs, buttons, snacks, and talk about shapes, patterns, and measurements during play and routines.

Reinforcement at home supports the personalised learning we offer in school. With strong home-school collaboration, children develop confidence in communication, problem-solving, and creativity—key skills that shape their future success.

At GEMS Wellington Academy – Al Khail, we believe every child is capable of remarkable growth in the early years. Find out how our EYFS curriculum nurtures early literacy, numeracy, and beyond by scheduling a personalised tour of our Dubai Hills school today.
