A Warm Welcome Back to Primary Students– Starting the School Year at WEK

June 2025

As the doors of WEK swing open for a brand-new academic year, we are thrilled to welcome both our returning students and those joining us for the first time. The first week back is always a special time—full of excitement, fresh beginnings, and the promise of growth ahead. Whether your child is stepping back into familiar routines or navigating a brand-new environment, we are here to ensure that every student feels safe, supported, and ready to thrive.

Supporting a Smooth Transition

The transition back to school, especially after a long summer break, can bring a mix of emotions for children and families alike. Excitement and anticipation often sit alongside nerves and uncertainty. At WEK, we understand the importance of this transition and have put thoughtful structures in place to help students feel settled and confident from day one.

During the first week, teachers and support staff focus heavily on wellbeing, routines, and relationships. Classrooms are calm, welcoming spaces where children can reconnect with friends, meet their new teachers, and find their feet at their own pace. Lessons are carefully planned to ease students into learning, with a balance of structured activities and time for reflection, discussion, and connection.

For our new students, we provide dedicated orientation sessions, buddy systems, and check-ins to make sure they are getting to know the school and building friendships. These small touches make a big difference, helping each child feel like they belong in the WEK community from their very first day.

Things to Think About Before the First Day

To help ensure a smooth start, here are some helpful recommendations for families in the days leading up to the return to school:

  • Re-establish routines: Begin setting regular bedtime and wake-up routines a few days before school starts to help children adjust to the school day rhythm.
  • Talk about it: Have open conversations with your child about what to expect. Discuss what they’re looking forward to and what might be making them nervous.
  • Get organised together: Involve your child in preparing uniforms, packing bags, and choosing lunch items. This helps build excitement and a sense of control.
  • Visit the school (if possible): For new families, even a brief walk around the school or looking through photos on our website can make the unfamiliar feel more familiar.

Our Commitment to Wellbeing

At WEK, we place student wellbeing at the heart of everything we do. During the first week, all classes begin with “getting to know you” activities, opportunities for self-expression, and discussions around feelings and goals. Teachers are attentive to each child’s emotional needs and create time to listen, reassure, and support.

For families, our team is available to provide guidance and answer any questions during this transition period. We believe strong partnerships between home and school are key to student success, and we are always happy to help.

As the school year unfolds, we look forward to sharing in your child’s growth, discovery, and joy. Together, let’s make this year a happy, confident, and inspiring one—for every student at WEK. Welcome back!
