Martin O'Hare

Secondary Vice Principal

It is my pleasure to be joining GEMS Wellington Academy – Al Khail in August 2021 and being part of the journey to become the best international British curriculum school in the UAE.

I have a strong belief in the science of learning and improving educational relationships.  Educational relationships between students and teachers facilitate the growth that results in life-long learning.  Through collaborative methods I will enhance student agency and advocacy so each student may become a truly independent life-long learner with the skills to be a problem finder and solver.

A key attraction of GEMS Wellington Academy – Al Khail is that it aligns with my own educational philosophy that is built upon evidence informed approaches and continuous improvement. This facilitates every student in achieving their full potential.

Prior to joining GEMS Wellington Academy – Al Khail, I have held a number of leadership positions in International Schools.  I have been Head of Secondary and Acting Head of a KG – Yr 13 school in Qatar.  Recently I worked for Dulwich College International as Deputy Director for their school in Zhuhai.

I hold a BSc in Business and Information Systems, a PG.Dip in Computer Science, and NPQML. I have over 17 years' experience in education having spent the first eleven of these in UK schools where I had significant middle and senior leadership roles and responsibilities. At Dulwich Zhuhai, I was responsible for Curriculum (academic and extra-curricular); Teaching and Learning; Timetabling and Staffing; Professional Learning; Assessment and Reporting; Data Tracking and Interventions; Exams; Performance Management; Calendars and Duty Rota.

I am passionate about learning and education, and encourage students to ‘Challenge themselves every day, competing only against themselves’.

Outside of school, I like to keep fit and to learn about new cultures.
